Miracle Cure by Harlan Coben

Miracle Cure is the latest release, though not a new book, from mystery/thriller author Harlan Coben. In this book, a cure for AIDS has been discovered, but a serial killer is knocking off the cured patients.

From the publisher:

In a clinic on Manhattan's Upper West Side, a doctor has dedicated his life to eradicating a devastating disease. One by one, his patients are getting well. And one by one, they're being targeted by a serial killer.

There's only one cure, but many ways to die...

I've only read a few of Coben's novels, since my reading preferences tend more toward action-adventure than mystery. Those I've read, however, have been fun reads because the pacing is fast and fills my need for a quick-moving story. Miracle Cure is no exception. The plot moves along at a steady clip, and the tension is high. There are plenty of potential bad guys, and the ending is satisfying.

A reader familiar with Coben's work will be able to tell it's one of his earlier works (his second book- initially released by a small publishing house.) The writing doesn't flow as well as his more recent works, and we meet many people who are more cliche than character. That's not to say this is a bad book- it simply pales in comparison to his current books. Some readers will find the subject matter controversial, and depending on your political leanings, you might find it politically slanted and a little preachy. If you don't find these elements off-putting, Miracle Cure is an enticing gateway drug to one of the best authors in the genre. If you're looking for a fast-paced mystery, give Miracle Cure a try.

The publisher provided a copy of this book for review.
